Is Weight Loss for Teens Healthy?
Everyone knows how important self image is for teenagers, and weight loss for teens can sometimes be very difficult. If a teenager feels that they are overweight, even by a few pounds, this may magnify their vision of being grossly obese. Most of the time, this couldnt be further from the truth, but try telling THEM that when their friends are stylishly slim.
This is most difficult for teenage girls. Our society has made it so important to be as thin as possible that it has led to many problems of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. These, of course, are not healthy alternatives as weight loss for teens. They are more measures of desperation for a teenager who has such horrible self image and self esteem problems that they take control in the fastest way they can find. What they dont understand is that they are not helping themselves at all. In fact, its quite the opposite.
While it may seem impossible to believe, it is actually easier for teens to lose weight than adults. Their metabolism is faster, and they are usually in better shape for physical exercise. Dieting is much more effective and their bodies love exercise. Yes, there ARE heavy teenagers, but they are often affected by genetics or emotional issues which show in weight problems.
One of the important ingredients in any program of weight loss for teens is outside encouragement. When you see your teen striving to stick to an eating and exercise plan, be sure to compliment her often. Even if the results are not totally visible just yet, compliments will keep her on the right track. If she knows that others are recognizing her efforts, she may be more motivated to continue.
You can help in another way that is very important. Take your teen grocery shopping with you and help her choose some foods that she really likes and that are also healthy. If you arent keeping cookies, chips, candy and other fattening treats in your kitchen, she will be more likely to be able to stay away from them.
Teaching the reward system can be helpful with weight loss for teens. What this basically means is that if your teen has had a rather good week in sticking to her diet, when she goes out with friends on the weekend, it wont kill her to have a slice of pizza. This keeps her from feeling deprived constantly without damaging the progress she has made.
Society needs to present a healthier image for teenagers to model themselves after. Victorias Secret models may look nice in that sexy lingerie, but a closer look will show you that these women do not carry a healthy weight. Weight loss for teens should encourage a healthier look, not a stick thin look.
